Elemental Words

There are days when words are like fire
Both light and destruction entwined
A solace that burns as it twists and it turns
Granting sight while rendering blind

There are days when words are like stones
Obdurate, unbending, yet known
Containing within, beneath jagged shale skin
Hardened wisdom as if it were bone

There are days when words are like water
The tumultuous sea now demure
A peaceful moment misread as an omen
Dark tragedies have an allure

There are days when words are like air
Breath of life, yet invisibly there
For all to perceive, but some to believe
Respiration will make them aware

Early Birds

The sleepless morning light creeps through
The crowns of barren trees
Filled with birds whose singing sounds
A warbling mockery
A second look reveals the truth
As wings take to the sky
Circling high, a soaring climb
The carrion creatures fly
Stumbling feet attempt escape
And fail to move instead
A baseless statue held in place
Cemented there by dread
The night deprived the sky of stars
Accursed lack of light
When the morning sun appeared
It brought a darker sight
Wheeling high in search of prey
With hunger haunted eyes
On wings arrived the fateful day
I met with my demise

The Minion (part 3)

The master watched the grim demise
With spreading smile upon his face
The terror called the Minion fell
The bloodied copse turned cursed place
Where summoned servant met the end
An anger-driven blade’s embrace
And deep into the shadows slipped
Escaped the master without trace

In Arnisten the people fear
A visit ‘neath the moonlit sky
The Minion Towers stand there now
Guarding with a watchful eye
The stories of that day are told
While some dare laugh and yet some cry
The nighttime nourishes our dread
That in the darkness we may die

The Minion (part 2)

On silent wings through morning sky
Until he found the wooded glade
The Minion found his master there
A wizened face obscured by shade
“What have you there?” the master said
“The souls of those felled by my blade”
“Who spied you leave the city gate?”
The Minion snarled, “I’ve not betrayed”

“And still there is no doubt you’ll see
They’ll find you here right where you stand”
The Minion bared his teeth and growled
The old man waved a wrinkled hand
He froze the beast there to the ground
The woven spell his last command
A curse to rid the beast of wings
And force his fate upon the land

Within the glade the servant slept
And passed long hours in airborne dreams
Until the mob upon him chanced
Revealed by sunlight’s wayward beams
Beneath the canopy they crept
Their sword blades armed with sharpened gleams
They fell on him a vengeful dance
And filled the woods with earthbound screams

The Minion (an excerpt)

This poem may not make sense out of context, but it comes from an idea I had when I first started writing, around the age of 12.  I wanted to tell the story of another world, the way so many authors have done, but I wanted to tell it in the form of a series of poems. Admittedly, it probably isn’t what most 12-year-olds think about, but given enough time to think, I felt like I could come up with anything.  Maybe that’s still true…

This will find its way into a novel I am outlining.  This is part of the backstory, part of the lore of a civilization that has closed itself off from much of the world out of fear.  This is an excerpt from the songs of the Steel People, Arn’s Folk as they sometimes call themselves, when the world needs to seem a simpler place.  There’s much more to be written, but for now–just a few lines.

When dawn awoke on city walls
The north breeze carried the weeping
That swept the silence from the streets
Upset the dreams still sleeping
As each house stirred with saddened calls
In the morning gloom’s safekeeping
Candle-eyed windows failed to see
A killer through shadows creeping

Dagger concealed beneath dark cloaks
Stolen life clasped in greedy hands
Few footprints left the winged thief
Evading the king’s searching bands
Soaring above the ancient oaks
Beyond the city’s subdued lands
Into the forest’s tangled reach
The Minion called by blood demands

An Instant in a Hurry

Born into the ceaseless flow
As the blink of an eye that saw nothing
The untiring pulse is a merciless driver
Who whispers sleep in the hushed tones
Reserved for secrecy and uncertainty
Dreaming of stationary moments
Where a drifting gaze wanders off
Out a window and goes in search
Of stillness to treasure

A Hope Like Light

I am a failure at playing
The unrelenting constant
The stone that won’t be swept
In the hurry of the current
Spending wasted wishes
For the water to grow roots
And stand sentry
Both as wall and roof
Against wind and rain
Protecting all below
From the very thing
That it once was
If there is change
Let it be growth
And understanding
To find harmony in discord
Illumination in defeat
A hope like light
When the world is dark

Questions Are Bigger

The questions are bigger than answers I find
I hope to discover with eyes that are blind
Their vision protected from all glaring fear
Returning attention and tuning the ear
To dreadfully bear every negative word
Deaf ears that abandon all gloom yet unheard
Even with hands that may go without feeling
Fingers reach outward attuned to revealing
If mystery’s shroud above all shall remain
In shadows that safeguard the hidden arcane
Tomorrow pursues the endeavor again

Erudition

Breathing in to hold the moment
Tomorrow flies on borrowed wings
Answers go in search of questions
Pondering the myriad things
There exist no means of counting
The quantity of mysteries
That fail not ever to evade
Despite our most desirous pleas
And so to live the constant quest
To learn without acuity
To strive with all that we possess
Yet live with ambiguity

Haunted

Though sun shines upon that dwelling
The darkest place is yet unseen
Its tale deserves one last telling
From memory that’s failed to glean
The meaning of what dwells in there
What waits within the dreary walls
With hunger that it cannot bear
For steps within abandoned halls

No lock fit through the rusting hasp
The hinges groaned in deference
The door did not resist my grasp
My path was lost from that day hence
I climbed and sought the upper floor
Beckoned on down a rambling hall
That ended in an open door
I could not stop held in that thrall

I entered though I could not see
In darkness that hung like a shroud
The horror that awaited me
And fearful in its grasp I cowed
Its eyes were pooled with visions bleak
That showed the dread within my soul
Like mirrors that I did not seek
That held me under their control

It tempted me with empty peace
If I would humanity trade
For promise of a sweet release
A being in my image made
A replica of deadened hands
That held me there against my will
Not governed by the hourglass sands
A curse that I would not fulfill

Upon release I fled that place
And sought again the noonday sun
I felt not warmth upon my face
But chill that I could not outrun
Close my eyes but yet I see
The pall that was hung over me
Within my mind will always be
A hinting of that entropy
