Sadness

If it were a hole
I would climb
Until sky
Sings in blue
Right in tune
With the sun
And the ground
Disappears

If it were the sea
I would swim
For my life
While the waves
Wash away
All the wounds
And the salt
In our tears

If it were the dark
Where the stars
Blink and shine
Echoing
Every word
Understood
Spoken once
Then forgot

If it were a thing
Not unseen
Like a weight
Without form
Labyrinthine
Where escape
Is a dream
Without end

Planning the Past

While we waited, trying our best
To ponder out a plan
A shape for the future
We couldn’t see
It was already upon us
There was no slowing its advance
No staunching the flow of time
The bleeding of moments
The slipping away
Of all that once lay before us
It unraveled like a spool of twine
From order to chaos
The strands gathering around our feet
Like rising floodwater
Impossible to swim
Our vacillation
No match for the current
We lamented
That we couldn’t just plan
The past instead

Recurring Dream

An elaborate and winding stair reaches an upper floor
Of a building that holds no great historical significance
Where a reverent hush stills the air
That smells of memories like sun-washed photos
Souvenirs forgotten that remind but never capture
The moments that didn’t feel like they would ever need revisiting
No line, no admission, no ticket stub to betray time or location
Words become bygone necessity last used before the passage back
Along an immeasurable distance and direction
Arrival brings nostalgia at the sights
That might disappear in a blink
When I close my eyes again

By Definition

When I was asked to define happiness
I spent a silent moment wondering
If there were words enough
To address such a question
For in that instant
A synonym would not suffice
An adjective would not describe
There was not a sound with meaning
In that expressionless quiet
I found myself instead asking
If a thing exists
Because it has a definition
Or if it has a definition
Because it exists

If Ever

If ever I tell you
I don’t know the answer
It’s only the truth
Like a fairy tale
In which fallibility is a curse
And knowledge awaits rescue
From a secluded tower
Perched in a neglected land
Where no maps are drawn
In the burnt hues of the earth
Upon the walls of caves
Where once upon a time
Wonder sought shelter
And danced in firelight
Until the world forgot
That day and night
Are the tandem reflection
Of the seen and unseen
Belief and perception

An Instant in a Hurry

Born into the ceaseless flow
As the blink of an eye that saw nothing
The untiring pulse is a merciless driver
Who whispers sleep in the hushed tones
Reserved for secrecy and uncertainty
Dreaming of stationary moments
Where a drifting gaze wanders off
Out a window and goes in search
Of stillness to treasure

Anxiety

Better to see than feel this darkness
Sitting too close like a tiresome guest
Whose stomach rumbles
With a pang not born of hunger

The conversation sputters
With guttering syllables
The illusion of light
Extinguished by silence

Pleasantries abandoned
Cast away at the door
Where no footprints remain
To muddy the threshold

The enduring unease
Of a lingering visitor
Uninvited shadow
Of a welcome overstayed

Outstretched in the gloom
An unseen hand
Waits to take me
Gently by the throat

A Hope Like Light

I am a failure at playing
The unrelenting constant
The stone that won’t be swept
In the hurry of the current
Spending wasted wishes
For the water to grow roots
And stand sentry
Both as wall and roof
Against wind and rain
Protecting all below
From the very thing
That it once was
If there is change
Let it be growth
And understanding
To find harmony in discord
Illumination in defeat
A hope like light
When the world is dark

Pursuit

We grow tired from the chase
As if time were something to be caught
A prize to be hunted
Mounted above the mantel
As a conversation piece
When moments pass
With nothing to say
That isn’t reminiscence
While forgetting that
Every second is a first
Every while a prey
That might be captured
If we lie long enough in wait

Free?

I’ve come in through your eyes
Thought you might like to know
When you looked at this page
I escaped my paper prison

I was but a captive to the ink
And now I am free
You left a window wide open
I climbed in when you weren’t looking

Here I am inside your head
Am I free to wander?
Or have I traded
One cell for another?
